A contagious bacterial infection on the skin that primarily affects young children.
What is it?
Impetigo is a highly infectious skin disease that predominantly affects young children but can afflict people of all ages. The disorder is marked by red sores or blisters that can manifest on any area of the body, typically starting on the arms, legs and face. Impetigo blisters frequently burst, ooze for several days then form a yellowish-brown crust. Although this condition can be itchy and distressing, it seldom poses significant health threats.
Mountain State Dermatology can help with treatment to reduce symptoms and reduce risk of spread.
How is it treated?
Instant treatment of impetigo is crucial to halt its transmission to others. Our board-certified providers will often recommend a topical antibiotic lotion which should be administered to the infected area as instructed. Oral antibiotics may be provided for more severe instances of impetigo.
Since impetigo can spread quickly, our team will also provide advice on avoiding recurrence and preventing its transmission to others. If you or your child have signs of impetigo, see one of our experienced dermatology providers today in Bridgeport, Clarksburg, Elkins, Hurricane, Morgantown, Parkersburg, South Charleston and Wheeling, West Virginia; in Waynesburg and Uniontown, Pennsylvania or in Marietta, Ohio.
