Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis is a skin condition caused by immune system malfunction, resulting in skin inflammation. It is not infectious and cannot be transmitted from one individual to another. Many individuals with psoriasis experience reddened, inflamed skin areas topped with thick, white-silver scales. These spots usually cause itchiness, and often, a burning discomfort and tenderness. It's typical for the skin around these areas to feel dry. In particularly troublesome areas, the skin can break and bleed. Stiff and swollen joints are also typical for psoriasis patients.
Psoriasis symptoms can vary and go through cycles that can last for a few days to several weeks. Psoriasis is usually a chronic, lifelong condition. The Mountain State Dermatology team is experienced in treating proriasis patients, even if past treatments have been ineffective.
How is it treated?
While there is currently no total cure for psoriasis, we can aid in managing your symptoms so you can get on with your life. Many patients find relief with topical treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids. Depending on your case, our team may propose additional treatments like salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids, or even straightforward remedies like aloe vera. In certain scenarios, may suggest and provide light/phototherapy to reduce inflammation. In severe cases, we may prescribe oral or injectable medications to help suppress your immune system. A newer type of treatment, JAK inhibitors, have shown positive results in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis.
