Patchy red areas on the skin, typically caused by an allergic reaction.
What is it?
Hives, also known as Urticaria, are itchy, red swellings that can appear anywhere on the body and vary in size. Hives are usually caused by an allergic reaction to things like food, drugs, dander and insect stings. Some patients find that stress can trigger hives. The red, blotchy rash from hives can be isolated or spread over large areas of the skin.
This skin irritation often subsides within a day, but fresh hives may develop, giving the impression that the condition is persisting or shifting around the body. Chronic Urticaria, where the condition lasts beyond six weeks, is less frequent, but may indicate a more severe underlying health concern.
How is it treated?
Our team at Mountain State Dermatology can help manage your hives. We can offer immediate relief by prescribing antihistamines, corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the itching and swelling. Our board-certified dermatology providers will also work with you to identify the trigger of your hives and provide guidance to avoid future flare-ups. In less common situations where hives are associated with a more serious illness, typically seen with chronic Urticaria, our team will help with diagnosis and a treatment plan.
