A skin condition primarily affecting the face and scalp, resulting in a scaly rash.
What is it?
Seborrheic dermatitis is a prevalent skin disorder identified by red, scaly, itchy and flaky skin primarily on the scalp. It can also impact other oily parts of the body like the face, chest and back. It's a persistent condition, with the exact origin still unknown, though it's thought to be associated with an inflammatory reaction on oil-rich skin or with a yeast named Malassezia. The symptoms often vary in intensity and might even vanish only to later reappear. Seborrheic dermatitis usually isn't harmful, but it can be uncomfortable and may result in self-consciousness or embarrassment if the rash is highly visible.
How is it treated?
While there's no absolute cure for seborrheic dermatitis, the Mountain State Dermatology team can offer a treatment strategy to control and alleviate the symptoms. Regular check-ups can aid in tracking the progress and effectiveness of treatments like topical antifungals, corticosteroid creams, lotions, or shampoos. Lifestyle modifications, like stress reduction and a thorough skincare routine, can also help manage outbreaks.
