Brown spots — also known as “age spots” and “liver spots” — are non-cancerous spots appearing on areas of the body primarily exposed to ultraviolet light such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms.
What is it?
Brown spots and skin discoloration are part of the skin's natural maturing process. These spots tend to be level with your skin's surface, discolored and of varying sizes. They tend to appear on parts of the skin exposed to ultraviolet light such as the sun, tanning beds or sun lamps. Brown spots are most common on the face, hands, shoulders and arms as these are the areas most often exposed to sunlight.
These spots can affect individuals of all skin types but are most prevalent in adults (usually over 50 years old) with fairer skin. Unlike freckles, these brown spots do not disappear over time. While they are harmless and typically do not need medical attention, our board-certified providers at Mountain State Dermatology can develop a customized treatment plan that will leave your skin with an even tone and a radiant glow.
We proudly help patients with brown spots and discoloration in the communities of Bridgeport, Clarksburg, Elkins, Hurricane, Morgantown, Parkersburg, South Charleston and Wheeling, West Virginia; in Waynesburg and Uniontown, Pennsylvania and in Marietta, Ohio.
