Any skin condition resulting from a fungus (yeast or mold) establishing in the skin, hair or nails.
What is it?
Fungal infections like athlete's foot, ringworm, yeast infections, jock itch and nail fungi begin when an unwelcome fungus finds its way inside your skin, hair or nails. While rarely life threatening, these infections can be more serious for patients with compromised immune systems. For all of us, they can cause uncomfortable or unsightly reactions.
Many fungal infections come with telltale symptoms, like the circular rash with dark outline that accompanies ringworm (which, for the record, involves a fungus, not a worm). Fungi also thrive in particular environments – often damp and/or warm – and can penetrate our skin's protective barrier through a cut, crack or other opening. Exercising caution in these environments, like wearing footwear in a damp locker room, can help prevent catching a fungal infection.
How is it treated?
Treatment for your infection is tailored to the specific fungus that has invaded your skin, hair or nails. If your infection doesn't clear up on its own, or seems to be worsening, our board-certified providers will diagnose you and prescribe the right antifungal medication and topical treatments. These medications help resolve your infection by killing the fungus in your body or stopping its growth.
