What is it?
Dandruff is a prevalent skin issue that typically affects the scalp, resulting in white specks of dead skin falling from the scalp and landing on the shoulders. It's frequently accompanied by an itchy scalp. There are multiple causes for dandruff such as dry skin, reactivity to hair products, insufficient shampooing and a yeast-like fungus known as malassezia.
Dandruff predominantly affects adults and is more prevalent in males than females. Dandruff is not harmful, but it can make patients self-conscious, especially if the flaking is more severe. While it is not related to poor hygiene, dandruff may become more noticeable if you do not cleanse your hair regularly.
How is it treated?
Our board-certified providers at Mountain State Dermatology can help to determine the specific cause of your dandruff through a scalp examination and additional tests, if needed. Depending on the cause and severity, we may prescribe medicated shampoos, creams or lotions. For persistent cases, our team might suggest prescription-strength shampoos or steroid lotions. We can also share guidance on the best hair care and lifestyle changes to minimize your dandruff. With regular follow-up visits, your dermatologist can monitor your progress and modify treatment as necessary to minimize pesky flakes and reduce the itch.
