Medical Dermatology Procedures & Treatments

Advanced medical dermatology procedures & treatments in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and surrounding cities—evidence-based care to diagnose, treat, and restore skin health.

Skin issues can be complex and disruptive. At DOCS Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists offer a wide range of in-office procedures and treatments—from diagnostic tests and light therapy to excisions and regenerative therapies—to relieve symptoms, treat underlying causes, and support long-term skin health.

Biologic Injections: Advanced prescription treatment that targets specific pathways in inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Biologics offer long-term control for patients who haven’t responded to oral or topical treatments.

Biopsies: A quick, in-office sampling of skin tissue used to diagnose rashes, skin cancers, infections, suspicious lesions, and unexplained skin changes. Biopsies are essential for accurate, timely diagnosis.

Excisions: A minor surgical procedure to remove skin cancers, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, cysts, lipomas, suspicious moles, and other growths or lesions. Performed with precision to fully remove the issue while preserving the cosmetic appearance.

Patch Testing & Allergy Testing: Identifies contact allergens, including ingredients in personal care products, metals, fragrances, and preservatives, to help determine the cause of chronic rashes or dermatitis.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): A light-activated treatment used for precancerous lesions and certain inflammatory conditions. PDT destroys abnormal cells while preserving healthy tissue.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): A regenerative treatment using your body’s own growth factors to stimulate healing. PRP is used for hair loss, scarring, and skin rejuvenation.

Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT): A non-invasive alternative to surgery for certain non-melanoma skin cancers. SRT uses precise, low-dose radiation to eliminate cancer cells with minimal downtime.

Topical Medications: Prescription creams, ointments, and gels formulated to treat infections, inflammation, acne, precancerous lesions, psoriasis, and more.

Ultraviolet Light Therapy (UVB phototherapy): A controlled light treatment for psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and dermatitis. UVB slows inflammation, reduces itching, and improves overall skin health.

XTRAC Laser: A targeted laser used for psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and other inflammatory conditions. XTRAC delivers focused UVB energy to reduce symptoms and promote repigmentation.

How our medical dermatology procedures help.

Medical dermatology procedures are designed to do more than just treat visible skin issues—they help you understand your condition, reduce discomfort, and protect your skin for the future. With our advanced, evidence-based care, patients can:

  • Find relief from itching, irritation, and chronic inflammation
  • Address persistent rashes, acne, psoriasis, eczema, or other inflammatory conditions
  • Detect and remove precancerous or cancerous lesions early
  • Excise unwanted growths, cysts, or lesions for both health and cosmetic reasons
  • Identify triggers such as allergens or irritants that worsen skin issues
  • Receive personalized, long-term management plans to prevent flare-ups and maintain skin health

How do we determine the right treatment plan for you?

Your dermatologist will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle. We may recommend diagnostic tools such as biopsies or allergy testing to pinpoint the cause of your condition. Once diagnosed, we select the best course of treatment based on:

  • Condition type and severity
  • Previous treatments and  skin sensitivity
  • Goals for symptom control and long-term health
  • Whether the condition is chronic, recurring, or acute

Note: Not all medical procedures and treatments are offered at each location. Please contact your nearest DOCS Dermatology location to confirm availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can medical dermatology procedures treat?
We use procedures to address rashes, eczema, psoriasis, acne, precancerous and cancerous lesions, warts, cysts, scars, and other chronic or complex skin issues.
Can these procedures improve appearance as well as health?
Yes. Many procedures, like excisions, PRP, or laser therapies, treat medical concerns while improving cosmetic appearance and boosting confidence.
Is PDT, XTRAC, or phototherapy painful?
These treatments are generally well tolerated. Some patients experience mild warmth or temporary redness, but most continue daily activities without downtime.
What is the difference between phototherapy and laser treatments like XTRAC?
Phototherapy exposes larger areas of skin to controlled UVB light, while XTRAC uses a highly targeted excimer laser for precise treatment of specific patches. Both reduce inflammation but are chosen based on the size, severity, and location of skin involvement.
When is a biopsy necessary?
A biopsy is recommended when a rash, lesion, or mole is unclear, persistent, or suspicious. It ensures accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.
Are biologics safe?
Yes. Biologics are FDA-approved and carefully monitored. They are highly targeted and often safer long-term than broad immunosuppressive therapies.
How long does patch testing take?
Patch testing typically spans several days and involves multiple visits. It helps identify the specific allergen causing chronic dermatitis.
What skin cancers can SRT treat?
SRT is commonly used for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma when surgery isn’t preferred or isn’t ideal due to location, age, or health considerations.
How many phototherapy sessions will I need?
Most patients require multiple sessions per week over several weeks, depending on their condition and severity.
Is PRP effective for hair loss?
PRP can stimulate hair growth for certain types of hair loss, especially early-stage thinning. Multiple sessions are typically recommended.
Do excisions leave a scar?
Any procedure that removes skin can leave a small scar, but our dermatologists use refined surgical techniques to minimize scarring. Proper aftercare—like keeping the site clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun—helps ensure the best results.
